In recognition of his inspiring story of kindness and perseverance, we have chosen Declan Maloney for the 2023 #CCMFBeKind Award. Declan is a senior at St. James High School and an avid member of the ‘Pride of St. James’ Marching Band in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Despite facing unimaginable challenges after losing a half of his right arm to bone cancer, Declan has continued to thrive in his passion for music. Chuck Capps, Director of Bands at St. James High worked diligently to construct a harness that would support Declan’s aspirations to ‘march on’ and after five years of hard work and perseverance, Declan is now able to play without his harness. His dream is to play with the University of South Carolina Marching Band. He was accepted into USC and plans on majoring in Engineering with a minor in music.
“Declan has always been the first person to offer help to anyone that needs it. Even when he needed help, he was driven to help others. Declan is one of a kind and gives of himself daily, regardless of his obstacles. We are honored to witness Declan as he is recognized for the #CCMFBeKind Award” says Chuck Capps, Director of Bands at St. James High School.
“Declan really touched our hearts with his love for music. His perseverance and consistent positive attitude and kindness is truly inspiring. We have some surprises in store for Declan and we can’t wait to share this experience with him,” said Bob Durkin, President of Carolina Country Music Fest.
Declan, we can’t wait to see you in June!
